Hofstra Repeats As CAA Men's Soccer Champion with 2-1 Win at Elon
Goals from Oliver Svalander and Francesco Perinelli led Hofstra to its second consecutive CAA Men’s Soccer title with win over Elon Saturday at Rudd Field.
Goals from Oliver Svalander and Francesco Perinelli led third-seeded Hofstra to its second consecutive CAA Men’s Soccer title in a 2-1 win over Elon Saturday at Rudd Field.
Svalander scored in the 39th minute, and Perinelli added what proved to be the game-winner in the 86th minute, as Hofstra withstood a late push from the top-seeded Phoenix to earn the Pride its sixth CAA Men’s Soccer title.
The game’s first goal came on a takeaway by Hofstra that led to a chance the other way.
The ball was sent ahead to Roc Carles, and Carles gave it off to Svalander, who blasted it past the outstretched keeper from the right side to put the Pride in front.
Perinelli doubled the lead on a rebound with less than five minutes remaining.
A corner from Svalander was sent in and headed by Ryan Carmichael, whose initial shot was stopped, before Perinelli put it home to make it 2-0 Hofstra.
Elon would get one back with 12 seconds remaining, when Kasper Lehm got past the Hofstra defense and scored from close range to bring the game to its final 2-1 margin.
Hofstra’s Eliot Goldthorp was named Most Outstanding Player after recording a goal and an assist in Sunday’s CAA Semifinal victory at UNCW.
He was joined by Carmichael, Pierce Infuso and Perinelli on the All-Tournament Team. Lehm was one of three Elon representatives, along with Franc Gamiz Quer and Ben Rosenblatt.
Hofstra outshot Elon, 13-8, for the game. All three of the Phoenix’s shots on goal came in the final 16 minutes of play. Hofstra’s Wessel Speel and Elon’s Ryan Bilichuk each made two saves.
Both teams look to have their names called in Monday’s NCAA Selection Show. It will be broadcast on NCAA.com at 1 p.m.
