D.C. United announced on Friday afternoon that the club had acquired Brazilian left back Marquinhos Pedroso off of waivers after FC Dallas let him go. To go along with this deal, United also sent Dallas their 2020 first round pick in the MLS SuperDraft while receiving $100,000 in general allocation money. 

The deal became complicated because when Dallas acquired Pedroso last year, they did so using discretionary targeted allocation money. Because of that, they are not allowed by MLS rules to trade him before he's been with his club for a year, which would have limited his movement until July. However, with United sorely needing help at left back, they were able to work with Dallas and the league to orchestrate this move. 

“We’re happy to add Marquinhos to our roster and provide some important depth at outside back,” Dave Kasper, D.C. United General Manager and VP of Soccer Operations, said in a statement released by the team. “He has a lot of professional experience in various leagues worldwide and we’re looking forward to integrating him into the team.”

The 25-year-old defender started his career in his native Brazil and played at three different clubs. Pedroso then spent part of 2017 in Turkey with Gaziantepspor on loan. For the 2017-2018 season, the left back joined Ferencváros in Hungary, where his side finished second in the league. All of his previous moves from Figueirense in Brazil had been on loan before Dallas brought him in on a permanent basis last July.

In the 2018 season, Pedroso made 13 appearances, all starts, including Dallas' game at Audi Field. However, with the arrival of Luchi Gonzalez at the helm this season, Pedroso found minutes hard to come by. The Brazilian had only two appearances to his name through the first two months of the season — a start and a substitute appearance, totaling 119 minutes.

Pedroso was in town on Wednesday but was not part of United's training, as the player was given permission to leave Dallas ahead of the move. According to the Washington Post's Steven Goff, Pedroso began training with the team yesterday, ahead of Saturday's game against the Columbus Crew.
