D.C. United had a first-half goal chalked off after a video review and then conceded late in a 1-0 loss to Minnesota United. At the brand new Allianz Field in St. Paul, Minnesota, the Black-and-Red thought they had taken a first-half lead thanks to a header from rookie defender Donovan Pines. However, after a video review, the goal was negated for contact from Frederic Brillant on Vito Mannone.

United played well defensively for most of the game, but Angelo Rodriguez's slight touch on a cross from Romain Metanire snuck into the goal, giving the Loons their first win at home, after draws against New York City FC and the LA Galaxy.

Ben Olsen didn't make any changes to his starting line up from Wednesday, when D.C. downed the Columbus Crew 1-0. Fielding the 3-4-2-1 formation once again, the only slight change was moving Paul Arriola to the wing back position, which pushed Lucas Rodriguez up as one of the attacking midfielders.   

Both teams were sluggish in the first half, having played last weekend and on Wednesday night. The hosts only managed two hots in the first half, and both were long-range efforts that were blocked. Not the form that the Loons had been in scoring 17 goals in their first seven games of the season. 

The Black-and-Red were marginally better but thought they had the opener through Pines in the 21st minute. United played a short corner to Junior Moreno, who whipped a cross into the box that was headed out. The ball fell as far as Lucas Rodriguez, who forced a save out of Vito Mannone. That save was pushed wide, where Rooney sent the ball back into the middle.

Pines, the tallest player on the field, rose up and won the header, looping the ball goalwards, after Mannone raced off his line to challenge for the ball. Pines went to the bench to celebrate his first professional goal, but Nima Saghafi was listening to his assistant referee about taking a look at the play on the video review.

Saghafi came back and waved the goal off, negating another set piece goal from the Black-and-Red. Via the Professional Referee Organization (PRO), the goal was called off because "referee determined that #13 on DC committed a foul on the goalkeeper. #13 impeded the goalkeeper's ability to make a play on the ball by holding down his arm."

The Black-and-Red had a couple of more chances from set pieces in the first half, but couldn't make them count, as they have been doing so far this season.

The Loons' luck changed in the second half, after having to sub off their star man. Darwin Quintero went down in the first half but stayed in the game, and tried to play on in the second half. He couldn't, though, and was replaced by Minnesota head coach Adrian Heath in the 51st minute. 

Miguel Ibarra replaced Rodriguez and immediately tested Bill Hamid in the 59th minute. Angelo Rodriguez got the ball out wide to Ibarra, who got a shot off inside the box, but Hamid reacted quickly enough to tip the effort over the bar. 

Rodriguez was fed the ball in the box in the 63rd minute, holding off Pines. With a quick turn, Rodriguez fired a shot that was likely to be goal-bound, but Pines blocked the effort before Hamid had to make a save.

A cross from Jan Gregus in the 75th minute seemed destined to find Abu Danladi at the far post, but Hamid stretched off his line to punch the ball away. Back down at the other end, moments later Luciano Acosta and Lucas Rodriguez exchanged a quick set of passes at the top of the box, but Acosta couldn't keep his shot on target.

It looked like D.C. was going to take another point from the road, and add another free kick to their stable, before Angelo Rodriguez's winner in the 82nd minute. A cross from right back Romain Metanire found Rodriguez at the near post, where the striker had cut just in front of Pines. The striker seemed to get the slightest of touches on the ball, taking it under Hamid for the game's only goal.
