European Stalwarts Get Chance In Berhalter's USMNT Set-Up Against Ecuador
Gregg Berhalter's USA squad face off against Ecuador tonight, as they prepare to defend their Gold Cup title this summer.
Gregg Berhalter’s second U.S. camp is in full swing and stiff tests against Ecuador and Chile should provide plenty to dissect ahead of this summer’s Gold Cup. 2019’s initial international window is the first chance to feature a mixture of MLS and European-based players for the USA, meaning the wait is finally over to see Weston McKennie, Christian Pulisic, and Tyler Adams line up for the Stars and Stripes under the new tactician. Kickoff against Ecuador is set for 8 PM ET at Orlando City Stadium tonight, and the game will be broadcast on ESPN2.
One of the biggest storylines of this camp is Berhalter’s decision to field Adams at right back, a shift from his central position in Leipzig’s midfield. In the January camp, San Jose's Nick Lima played as a right back, but when the US had possession, he stepped up in a midfield role. Adams is expected to play the right back/defensive midfield position in the same manner.
As a result, DeAndre Yedlin will be pushed higher up the field into a winger role to maximize his abilities in attack. Pulisic gets his first chance to feature since Berhalter’s appointment and will line up centrally with the ability to drift and open up the defense with his creativity. Veteran Michael Bradley will provide cover for the back line once again and will be tasked with quickly feeding the young offensive talent in front of him.
Presumed first choice keeper Zack Steffen pulled out of camp due to a minor injury, so it’s a toss-up between Sean Johnson and Ethan Horvath to get the start this evening. Jesse Gonzalez was called in to replace Steffen, but doesn't have the same experience as his fellow keepers. In central defense John Brooks and Matt Miazga make their returns to the national team setup and appear to be the preferred options moving forward.
D.C. United’s Paul Arriola is looking to continue his excellent start to 2019 for both club and country and has his sights set on defending the country’s title in the upcoming Gold Cup this summer.
"It’s great to get called in once again under Gregg, where in the previous camp I was able to really excel in the second game against Costa Rica," Arriola told Dave Johnson in an interview with FloFC. “We have a big international tournament in the Gold Cup, that’s a must win for us," the 24-year-old added.
Today’s match marks the fifteenth meeting between the teams, and the U.S. has the chance to pull the series all square at 5-5-5 with a win. Ecuador are on a fine run of form since the fall, losing just once in their last five friendly matches (3-1-1).
La Tricolor are preparing for this summer’s Copa America and have a familiar face calling the shots in manager Hernan Dario Gomez, who guided Panama to their first ever World Cup appearance last year. Manchester United’s Antonio Valencia and Enner Valencia of Tigres headline the 23-man roster that a healthy mix of veterans and youth, as well as players based both domestically and aboard.
Here is our expected U.S. lineup for the match in Orlando.
4-3-3: Ethan Horvath; Daniel Lovitz, John Brooks, Tim Ream, Tyler Adams; Weston McKennie, Michael Bradley, Christian Pulisic; Paul Arriola, Gyasi Zardes, Deandre Yedlin
