Goalkeepers Shine As D.C. United, New York City FC Battle To 0-0 Draw
There were chances for both teams in Sunday's 0-0 draw between D.C. United and New York City FC, but both keepers earned their shutouts.
Bill Hamid and Sean Johnson starred for D.C. United and New York City FC on Sunday afternoon, as the two teams battled to a 0-0 draw at Yankee Stadium. Both keepers made game-altering saves, with United now having played two games in 2019 without conceding a goal.
Johnson denied Luciano Acosta and Paul Arriola in the first half and then kept Acosta from his second goal of the season in the 83rd minute. Hamid made six saves throughout the game, none bigger than two in the final minutes of the game, when it looked like United had to hang on a bit for their point in the Bronx.
A week after the successful opener against Atlanta United, head coach Ben Olsen fielded the same starting lineup on Sunday afternoon. Wayne Rooney led the line for the Black-and-Red, supported by Luciano Acosta, Paul Arriola, and Luciano Acosta.
Rooney was accidentally listed as a defender before the game on the video board in Yankee Stadium, which proved prophetic in the fifth minute. A free kick from Rooney near midfield ended in a foul called on United near the box. City quickly took the free kick, and Alexandru Mitrita was off to the races from his own end. Rooney was one of several players to chase Mitrita into United's box, and Rooney slid in to tackle the ball away before the Romanian could get a shot away.
Acosta, who opened his account last week, should have had the visitors ahead in the 11th minute. From a throw-in on the right, United retained possession, and Rooney slipped Arriola into the box. The winger found Acosta, who settled himself, before rifling a shot that keeper Sean Johnson parried away.
Johnson was at it again in the 24th minute, this time denying Arriola, who raced onto a pass into the box from Rooney. Arriola didn't have much to aim for from a tight angle, but still forced a save out of Johnson.
City took over the final 15 minutes of the half, and Alex Ring, who scored in last week's draw against Orlando City, had a shot in the 31st minute fly just over Bill Hamid's goal. Six minutes later, another effort from distance by Ring was on target, but Hamid dove to his right to push the shot away.
It was New York still on top to start the second half, and recycling possession in the 49th minute helped Maxi Moralez pick out Valentine Castellanos at the back post. Castellanos' header though bounced just wide of the post.
A swift move from the Black-and-Red led to Junior Moreno laying the ball off to Arriola in the box. That pass seemed to catch Arriola off guard, who tried to play the ball to the back post, only for the ball to sail out on him.
Rooney found Arriola in the 66th minute, but Arriola's centering pass was knocked out of the box. Leonardo Jara picked up possession, but fired a shot that was deflected out for a corner, which United couldn't capitalize on.
Hamid was tested in the 78th minute, as City won a free kick just outside the box. Moralez's free kick did well to get around United's wall, but Hamid punched the shot away from goal, and the Black-and-Red scrambled to clear away the danger.
In the 83rd minute, United had another golden chance for a goal, only to be stymied once again by Johnson. Acosta played the ball into space for the substitute Ulises Segura, and then received the ball back at the top of the box. A first-timed effort from Acosta was then saved by Johnson's foot, denying United a late winner.
NYC had a couple of chances late on to win the game, but couldn't find their way past Hamid. Mitrita had a shot from range in the 89th minute, but the stinging effort was met by Hamid's strong hands. A minute later, Ring had a diving header, but Hamid somehow got a hand to the shot, keeping the game scoreless when it mattered most for United.
Hamid had to make one more desperate save in stoppage time, as two City players broke through the back line, onside on a cross, but United cleared the danger, to move to four points from two games. The Black-and-Red are back at home next Saturday, hosting Real Salt Lake.
