Two more top prospects are AHL-bound.

The San Jose Sharks have sent defenseman Shakir Mukhamadullin and forward Thomas Bordeleau to the San Jose Barracuda. Both players missed the Sharks’ entire preseason schedule and first six regular-season games; San Jose Hockey Now reported that each player had a lower-body injury.

These moves add to an already much-improved Barracuda line-up this season following several offseason signings. The team swept its two-game home series against Iowa this past weekend, outscoring the Wild by a 12-3 combined count. A two-game at Henderson opens tonight.

Mukhamadullin, 22, came to the San Jose organization as a key piece of the February 2023 deal that sent Timo Meier to the New Jersey Devils. He had gone 20th in the 2020 NHL Draft to the Devils. Last season in 55 games for the Barracuda, he had 7-27-34 and also played his first three NHL games with the Sharks. After a 22-goal rookie campaign in 2022-23 for the Barracuda, Bordeleau split last season between the NHL and AHL. He had 6-5-11 in 27 games for the Sharks while adding 11-14-25 in 35 AHL appearances. San Jose took the 22-year-old 38th overall in 2020.

The Barracuda feature a prospect-studded roster that includes forward Filip Bystedt, who is just 20 years old and already has two full seasons of SHL experience. The Sharks took Bystedt in the first round of the 2022 NHL Draft. After a late-season audition with the Barracuda, Bystedt is in North America full-time now and has provided 2-3-5 in his first four AHL games this season. Forward Kasper Halttunen, taken 36th overall in the 2023 NHL Draft, is in the NHL at age 19 and already has 2-1-3 through four games. Also up front is rookie Collin Graf, a Hobey Baker Award finalist the past two seasons at Quinnipiac. Rookie defenseman Luca Cagnoni had 18-72-90 in his final WHL season with Portland.

And of course there is goaltender Yaroslav Askarov, the centerpiece of a major summer trade with the Nashville Predators that brought a potential NHL number-one goaltender to the San Jose organization. Askarov, who spent the past two seasons with Milwaukee and was the 11th overall selection in the 2021 NHL Draft, has come through with back-to-back shutouts in his first two games with the Barracuda.

With the Sharks off to an 0-5-2 start, these moves also provide Bordeleau and Mukhamadullin a chance to go to a winning environment with the 3-1-0-0 Barracuda. San Jose management made several upgrades to the Barracuda roster coming into this season, bringing in the likes of forwards Andrew Poturalski and Colin White along with defenseman Jimmy Schuldt after the Barracuda finished 30th in the AHL last season.
