Pride and the coveted Governor’s Cup are what will be on the line Saturday when Brown University and the University of Rhode Island meet at Meade Stadium in Kingston, Rhode Island.

It will be the 108th meeting between the two storied programs, which played for the first time in 1909, making it one of the oldest rivalries in college football. The oldest is Yale-Princeton, which began in 1873.

Brown dominated in the early years against Rhode Island, winning the first 23 meetings and 37 of the first 40, but URI has been the more successful team since the introduction of the Governor’s Cup in 1981.

The Brown Bears own a 73-32-2 advantage in the series all-time, while the Rhode Island Rams are 22-19 in the Governor’s Cup era.

This year’s edition will get underway at 1 p.m. Eastern, with the Rams looking to be the first of the two teams to hold the trophy for six consecutive years.

Rhode Island is 4-1 in 2024 and recently broke into the national rankings. 

The Rams are coming off a thrilling 46-44 double-overtime win over Coastal Athletic Association foe Hampton, which helped them join three other teams at the top of the CAA standings with 2-0 records.

In the latest American Football Coaches Association FCS Coaches Poll, Rhode Island landed in the No. 21 spot, up four places from the previous week. 

The game against Brown will be a one-game break from conference play, before the Rams settle back in for six consecutive CAA contests to close the regular season.

Brown, which plays a 10-game schedule and competes in the eight-team Ivy League, is 2-1 this year and coming off a 42-35 loss to CAA newcomer Bryant. 

If the Bears can get back on track and get the win Saturday, they’ll be 3-1 for the first time since 2013. Brown was 5-5 overall last season and 3-4 in conference play. 

The Rams won last year’s Brown-URI game on the road by a final score of 34-30, which was sealed by a game-ending interception with less than a minute to play. 

Are the Bears ready to return the favor and reclaim the Governor’s Cup on the Rams’ home turf? The last time they won was a 24-21 home victory in 2017.

Rhode Island All But Seals Win Over Brown With QB Touchdown, Rams Lead 31-21

After blocking what would've been a game-tying field goal, Rhode Island marches 80 yards on nine plays and eats almost six minutes off the clock.

Farrell keeps it and takes it in from 5 yards out, giving the Rams a 30-24 lead. Groff adds the extra point for a 31-21 advantage with about three minutes left on the clock.

Brown's attempt at a 37-yard game-tying field goal is blocked by senior linebacker Gabe Salomons.

It still hits the crossbar but doesn't go through. 

Rhode Island gets the ball back at its own 20 with just less than nine minutes remaining in the game.

The Bears' 56-yard drive included a 35-yard pass from Willcox to freshman running back Matt Childs.

Rhode Island Stops Brown On Fourth Down, Scores On Ensuing Drive - Rams Lead 24-21

Two plays after stopping a fourth-down try by Brown (by inches), Rhode Island finds the end zone to take the lead against the Bears.

Senior running back Deon Silas runs for 21 yards on the first play of the drive, and Harris finishes the effort on the second play with a 45 yard touchdown run. The 66-yard drive takes 37 seconds.

Groff adds the extra point to give the Rams a 24-21 lead. 

There are 12 minutes left in the contest.

Groff kicks one through from 20 yards to cut the deficit to 21-17 with less than two minutes left in the third quarter.

The Rams go for it on fourth and 2 with 30 seconds left in the first quarter, and graduate running back Malik Grant is able to punch it in from 2 yards out to put Rhode Island ahead 13-7.

Rhode Island Rams Get On The Board Against Brown

Rhode Island capitalizes on the opportunity and field position, and Farrell connects with redshirt sophomore receiver Marquis Buchanan in the corner of the end zone from 16 yards out for the Rams' first score of the day. 

Sophomore kicker Ty Groff adds the extra point to tie the game at 7-7 with just under seven minutes remaining in the first quarter.

After jumping out to a 2-0 start this season, Brown received votes in both main polls (AFCA FCS Coaches Poll and Stats Perform FCS Coaches Poll), marking the first time since 2008 the Bears achieved that feat. They’ve since fall out, however. 

The Brown offense is led by quarterback Jake Willcox, who has completed 59 of 109 passes for 852 yards and six touchdowns. He also has thrown one interception this year. Willcox leads the Ivy League so far this year in pass attempts, yards, yards per game (284) and total offense (314.33).

Only two receivers have 10 or more catches this year – wide receiver Mark Mahoney (13) and freshman running back Matt Childs (10). 

On the ground, Childs has rushed 14 times for 76 net yards – third on the team – but team-leading performances in Brown’s last two games helped him to back-to-back Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors. 

Brown leads the Ivy League in points per game with 30.7 and total points (92) and is second behind Columbia in total yards (1,235) and yards per game (411.7).

Among the conference’s eight teams, the Brown defense is giving up the third-most yards per game (406) and points per game (28).

Redshirt sophomore Devin Farrell and senior Hunter Helms have handled the snaps this year for the Rams, with Farrell seeing about 75% of the action. He has completed 58 of 106 passes for 782 yards and six touchdowns, but he also has thrown three interceptions. 

The top receiver for Rhode Island is redshirt sophomore Marquis Buchanan, who has 19 catches for 284 yards and two touchdowns.

The team’s top rusher is graduate running back Malik Grant with 421 yards and four touchdowns on 69 attempts. 

The Rhode Island offense is in the bottom half of the 16-team CAA in most categories, while the defense is fifth in the conference in yards allowed per game at 368.4, while allowing a ninth-best 27.8 points per contest.
