Clemson vs Campbell Women's Soccer: 5 Things To Know

Coming off the first College Cup appearance in program history, the Clemson Tigers look to emerge as national championship contenders again in 2024. Their early-season schedule takes them to Buies Creek for a Sept. 1 showdown against Campbell, a team eager to make noise in its second season as a member of the Coastal Athletic Association

Clemson heads into Eakes Athletics Complex looking to build momentum for the Atlantic Coast Conference schedule. Since dropping their season opener to Auburn, the Tigers have come on strong with a pair of shutout victories.

Campbell, meanwhile, aims for an attention-grabbing shakeup — and its second win over an ACC opponent this season after defeating NC State on Aug. 22, 2-1.

Clemson Frosh Kendall Bodak is Starting Strong

Veterans fueled Clemson's run to the 2023 College Cup. 1st Team All-ACC honorees Hal Hershfelt, Makenna Morris and goalkeeper Halle Mackiewicz were seniors and their departures left considerable voids for coach Eddie Radwanski to fill in 2024.

Stepping up early in that process has been freshman midfielder Kendall Bodak.

Bodak, a newcomer from Monson, Massachusetts, has taken over where Hersfelt left off a season ago. Bodak leads Clemson through its first three matches with four points, including two assists to tie fellow freshman midfielder Anna Castenfelt for the team's early-season lead.

Campbell Builds Around Returning Contributors

Campbell's top two goal scorers in 2023 — forwards Alyssa Tucker and Kaleigh Backlund — found the back of the net five and four times a season ago. Look for them to increase their output as the cornerstones for the Camels in 2024.

Tucker, a sophomore, made 14 starts last year as a freshman. Her 16 shots on goal and .762 shot-on-goal percentage were tops among all Camels with more than one attempt. She is again setting the pace early into 2024 with three shots on goal through Campbell's first four matches.

Backlund appeared in all 17 games as a junior in 2023 with five starts, and she made the most of her 542 minutes played. Backlund scored four goals with 7-of-13 shots on goal. Her senior season is off to a fast start with a pair of goals against George Mason and NC State.

North Carolina Transfer Goalkeeper Nona Reason Settles in for Clemson

Nona Reason moved within the ACC from North Carolina to Clemson during the offseason, and she seems right at home in her new home. Reason started each of the Tigers' first three matches and produced clean sheets in wins over High Point and West Virginia.

Combined with her five saves against Auburn, Reason has eight heading into Clemson's Labor Day weekend road swing against Furman and Campbell.

Sierra Vance Emerging as Campbell's Go-To Goalie

After making starts in both 2022 and 2023, Sierra Vance appears poised to be the full-time starter in the net for Campbell with her initial performance in 2024.

Vance went 3-0-1 in 2022 with five saves and 2-0 with nine saves last season. Through three appearances this season, Vance has eight saves with five coming in a shutout tie vs. East Carolina. Vance was also solid in the Camels' win over NC State with three saves.

Campbell Seeks Its Second Straight ACC Win

Campbell soccer hadn't enjoyed much success against ACC opponents prior to its Aug. 22 date with NC State, including a 2024 season-opening loss to Virginia Tech. With the 2-1 defeat of the Wolfpack, however, the Camels made program history.

With its first ACC win now in the books, Campbell has a unique opportunity to make it two in a row — and against a team with both ACC and College Cup championship aspirations.

Although Clemson's roster underwent widespread changes from a season ago, the Tigers have garnered votes in the United Soccer Coaches poll and projected for the top five in their conference per the ACC's preseason poll. For Campbell, the Tigers' visit to Buies Creek is a chance to not just make more program history, but launch the Camels into the rest of their season — including Coastal competition — with the momentum of an NCAA Tournament-quality club.
