WEEKLY AWARDS

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Victor Stromsten, Elon

Senior | Forward | Stockholm, Sweden / Hersby Gymnasium

Stromsten’s first career brace earned Elon a 2-2 draw on Saturday at Northeastern. The senior from Sweden scored the game’s opening goal in the 20th minute and struck again in the 72nd minute to bring Elon level and earn a CAA point on the road in Brookline.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Edmond Kaiser, Stony Brook

Graduate Student | Goalkeeper | Karlsruhe, Germany / Helmholtz Gymnasium

Kaiser collected a pair of shutouts in a 1-0-1 week that kept Stony Brook at the top of the table. The graduate student from Germany made three stops in a scoreless draw Tuesday at Seton Hall and collected four saves to make an early goal stand up in a 1-0 win at Charleston on Saturday.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

TJ Hastings, Delaware

Freshman | Defense | Middletown, Del. / Appoquinimink

Hastings repeats as Rookie of the Week after a pivotal goal in Delaware’s Saturday draw at Drexel. The freshman from Delaware scored with just an over a minute remaining in the contest to even the score at 3-3 and keep the Blue Hens in a tie for the sixth and final CAA Championship spot.

NEWS AND NOTES

TAKE THE LONG WAY HOME

With three Saturdays remaining, the top two teams in the CAA are separated by three points and 34 miles of bumper-to-bumper traffic on the Northern State Parkway (or the LIE, if by bus.)

Stony Brook, in its second year in the league, is atop the table at 14 points with a 4-0-2 start to CAA play; the Seawolves were picked to finish 11th out of 11 in the preseason coaches’ poll.

Hofstra, the two-time defending CAA champion, is three points back with a game in hand. The teams played to a 1-1 draw in their regular season matchup.

O, YES

Two of the nation’s top scorers this season hail from CAA teams.

Hofstra’s Ryan Carmichael is second in the nation with 24 points, while his 10 goals are third. Monmouth’s Ben Zakowski is fifth nationally with nine goals.

GET OUT THE VOTE

Hofstra is in the United Soccer Coaches poll for the fourth straight week at No. 18.

The Pride is 9-1-3 after a 1-1 draw at Virginia and 1-0 win over Monmouth last week.

TUESDAY TESTS AND MUST-SEE TV

Elon will take on a nationally ranked opponent for the second consecutive Tuesday with a contest at No. 15 Duke.

New England and New York will be treated to CAA Soccer on cable, as Northeastern hosts upstart Bryant on NESN+ and No. 18 Hofstra heads to Fordham in a game on MSG. Both opponents have been ranked or receiving votes this season.

TEAM NOTES

Campbell’s Tuesday match at VCU has been postponed.

Leonardo D’Ambrosio and Peter Thomas lead Charleston with three goals each this fall.

TJ Hastings has won back-to-back Rookie of the Week awards; Delaware has won five Rookie honors in the last two seasons.

Dominick Bachstein leads Drexel with five goals this season.

Victor Stromsten recorded his first career brace in Elon’s Saturday draw against Northeastern.

Wessel Speel earned the 23rd shutout of his Hofstra career on Saturday, tying him with Matthias Gumbrecht for the program record.

Ben Zakowski’s nine goals for Monmouth this fall are tied for fifth nationally.

Gabe Mercer (4) and Ethan Newsome (3) have combined for seven of UNCW’s 14 goals in 2023.

Tuesday’s match is the second consecutive midweek Northeastern will play agains teams that have been ranked or receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches poll this fall.

Stony Brook ranks 11th nationally in total goals this fall (25), sixth in assists (29), and seventh in points (79).

Lucas Caldas has scored four of William & Mary’s 12 goals this season.
